The city of Schoten collects geographic data in the field with open source software

The city of Schoten uses for several years an open source geographic information system (GIS). Many data in this system are coming from higher authorities, but there are also more and more own data collected. To collect their data easier Schoten went in search of a mobile GIS solution: a unit with GPS to view and collect data in the field. Some years ago you had to purchase an expensive device with expensive software. Now you can use Quantum GIS on an android tablet PC. The Swiss expert Marco Bernasocchi ensured that Quantum GIS could run on an android tablet, and that the GPS of the tablet could be used within the GIS environment. The city of Schoten can now start with the simple mapping of various data such as street trees, street addresses and road signs.
