1st Study Visit
In the context of the OSEPA project MFG
(Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Wurttemberg)
carried out the 1st Study Visit of the consortium at its
premises on 8th and 9th of June 2010.
The programme of study started with a welcome speech by MFG CEO, Klaus Haasis. Further to, experts assigned
from MFG shared their own valuable experience on Open Source Software usage in Public Administrations.
Specifically, the knowledge shared by Thomas Uhl, the publisher of the Linux Universe -
Springer Heidelberg book, chairman of the Linux Working Group of Guide Share Europe (GSE)
and founding member of the association GNOME Deutschland e.V. and the Linux Solution Group
(LiSoG) was of particularly importance.
Similarly, significant were the experiences shared from David Gumbel (CEO ITOMIG GmbH /
City of Boblingen) and Reinhard Schuhmacher (Director Business Development CEMEA / Ingres Germany
GmbH Government) on FOSS Economic Benefits and Business Process Improvement in Public Administrations.
An "interactive tutorial" then followed which offered to the participants the chance to exchange
ideas and insights on FOSS topics through an open and creative discussion.
The contributions of Horst Brauner (IT Services / City of Schwabisch Hall) and Oliver Schulze
(CEO Agorum Software GmbH), during the 2nd day of the Study Visit, were also remarkable. In particular,
they raised some interesting insights on FOSS benefits in the Service Directive as well as in Document
Management processes in Public Administrations.
All participants evaluated that the
Study Visit was very useful (scoring 5 or 6 out of 6 when asked about
the usefulness) or at least useful (scoring 4 out of 6). The City of Schoten, OSEPA project partner, has
decided to apply the Open Source Document Management System by Agorum which was presented during the Study
Visit and which has already proved to be successful in the City of Schwabisch Hall.
